
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
FIT FOR GOLD Cadets complete 30 hours of pre-training before assignment
to an after-school program to work six hours per week for 80 hours per semester.
Cadets are paid an hourly wage under the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
to assist elementary and middle school students with homework, playground
activities and nutrition information.
Cadets receive five elective credits a semester and participate in
academic enrichment and college readiness activities to help them to excel
academically, graduate high school and enter college or advanced training.
BENEFITS TO STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY
- 87% of Fit for Gold Cadets improve by one grade level or better in math and/or reading.
- Cadets demonstrate increased commitment and preparation for college.
- The importance of good nutrition and physical fitness is promoted to children and their families.
- Nearly 1,500 elementary and middle school children improve academically and increase self-esteem each year due to the support of Fit for Gold Cadets.
- Teachers and workers in more than twenty school and community-operated after-school programs receive the staff support of Fit for Gold Cadets.
